On September 7, 2014, the UN reported that nearly 50 percent of up to 1.8 million Iraqis displaced since January are children. This tragedy follows earlier reports from UNICEF in 2012 that there were already about 800,000 orphans in Iraq after years of war and sectarian violence.

This ongoing humanitarian crisis poses an urgent threat to the future security and stability of Iraq. Orphaned, displaced, and street children who are desperately poor are dangerously vulnerable to recruitment and exploitation by criminals or terrorists, as well as physical abuse and human trafficking. Unless loving action is taken now, many of these extremely vulnerable children may reach adulthood without help for the trauma and suffering they have experienced. The need is urgent.
